Laying Tiles - A Do-It-Yourself Project

Laying Tiles - A Do-It-Yourself ProjectIf you are looking for a home improvement project, why not look at your flooring and see if you need to be laying tiles. Floor tiles do wear out and need some sort of refurbishing every now and then. But if you can afford to lay out new tiles in your bathroom or guest room, you can surely do it on your own. Laying tiles as a project can save you hundreds of pounds if you want to do it yourself.

The cost of labour these days somehow restricts many home owners from laying new tiles in their homes. Using quality floor tiles will allow you to save more and it only takes a day or two to install them in your room of choice.

Floor tiles vary in size and material, colours as well as price range. The most commonly used tiles are made of ceramics which are ideal for bathrooms, and vinyl tiles for house flooring.

Tile cement is the usual adhesive that is used to stick the tiles on the floor. It helps secure the tiles prior application of grout.

Steps In Laying Tiles

Laying tiles on your own should not be a hard laboured project. It takes planning and preparation to effectively execute your tile laying project in a breeze.

1. The first thing you need to do is to have a plan and a visual guide in print to help you with the measurement and design. This will be your outline for the entire project.

2. Check your floor and make sure it has a flat and even surface. Use a level to check and if there are loose floorboards, you may use a hammer to put them back into place. You may need to replace the worn out and damaged ones.

3. Visualise your tiles by laying them down on the centre of the floor minus the adhesive. Lay a few tiles from the centre going toward the wall to see if you have enough tiles for the entire room.

4. Spread the tile adhesive on the floor as per package instructions. Wait until the adhesive is dry before you lay the tiles. Start from the centre going toward the walls. Dry the laid out tiles for at least 24 hours.

5. Apply grout after 24 hours. You may ask advice from tile suppliers, regarding the type of grout and tile adhesive to use.

Laying tiles shouldn’t be too complicated or difficult. You may search the internet for good do-it-yourself tile laying projects and tips before you proceed with your own project.
